Two crane operators injured after crane catches fire at Mumbai Port
Two crane operators were injured after a crane caught fire while cargo was being unloaded at the Mumbai Port on Sunday evening, an official said.
The incident occurred at around 7.30 pm while a 140-tonne cargo was being unloaded from the Barbados-flagged vessel 'Vienna'. Two cranes belonging to the private firm 'Barkat' were being used for the operation, a police official said.
During the unloading, one of the lifting straps slipped because of an imbalance. This caused the entire weight of the cargo to suddenly move onto the second crane.
The sudden shift in weight lifted the second crane off the ground. Its telescopic boom then hit the vessel, resulting in a fire inside the crane, the official said.
Firefighters from the Mumbai Port fire brigade immediately reached the spot and brought the fire under control.
The two injured operators, Ranjeet Singh and Nishant Singh, who both work for Barkat, were taken to St George Hospital for medical treatment.
An inquiry has been ordered to determine the exact cause of the accident, the official said. (with inputs from PTI)
