Trump shares Sharif speech praising his role in Operation Sindoor ceasefire
US President Donald Trump on Friday shared a video of Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s address to the United Nations in which he thanked Trump for his “timely intervention” during the India-Pakistan military confrontation in May 2025.
Trump posted the 87-second clip on Truth Social without any accompanying comment. In the video, Sharif describes India’s Operation Sindoor as “external aggression” and credits Pakistan Army Chief Asim Munir with providing “courageous leadership” during the confrontation.
Sharif also praised what he called Trump’s “resolute and visionary leadership” and “timely intervention”, saying it helped save millions of lives in South Asia.
Trump had made a similar claim during his address to the UN General Assembly earlier this week, saying he helped settle eight conflicts, including the India-Pakistan confrontation. He said Sharif had credited him with saving 30 million lives in South Asia.
India, however, has consistently rejected the US president’s account of how the hostilities were brought to an end.
Operation Sindoor was launched by India on May 7, 2025, following the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack in which 26 people were killed. India said the operation targeted terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.
According to India's official account, Pakistan’s Director General of Military Operations contacted his Indian counterpart on May 10 and sought a halt to military action. India subsequently agreed to stop military operations from 5 pm that day.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also said that no world leader asked India to stop Operation Sindoor and that the decision to suspend the military action followed the DGMO-level communication with Pakistan.
Trump's latest post comes amid renewed attention to competing accounts of the events that led to the cessation of military operations between India and Pakistan in May last year.
