Trump dials PM Modi on West Asia conflict

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump held a nearly 40-minute phone conversation on Tuesday, focusing on the evolving situation in West Asia and the need to keep critical energy routes secure.
Sharing details, Modi said in a post, “Received a call from my friend President Donald Trump. We reviewed the substantial progress achieved in our bilateral cooperation in various sectors. We are committed to further strengthening our Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership in all areas.”
“We also discussed the situation in West Asia and stressed the importance of keeping the Strait of Hormuz open and secure,” he added.
US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor said the two leaders reviewed India-US ties and discussed several key areas of cooperation, including potential deals.
Echoing the positive tone of the engagement, Sergio Gor posted, “A very positive and productive call! Stay tuned…” The call — their first since the US-Iran ceasefire and the collapse of talks in Islamabad — also reviewed progress in bilateral ties and explored ways to deepen cooperation.
Gor said the leaders discussed developments in the Middle East and broader India-US engagement. “They just got off the phone a few minutes ago. The President gave an update on what is happening in the Middle East, along with some of the big-ticket items happening in Washington between the United States and India,” he said.
He also indicated that economic engagement could deepen further, saying “some big-ticket deals, including on energy, are expected between India and the US in the next few days and weeks.”
During the exchange, Modi told Trump, “People of India love you,” while Trump responded, “I just want you to know we all love you.” The leaders had earlier spoken on February 2 to review progress on a bilateral trade deal, and again on March 24 to discuss the evolving regional situation.
The latest interaction comes amid continued uncertainty over the fragile ceasefire and expectations of further diplomatic engagement between the United States and Iran.
