Tree plantation campaign turns into public movement

A citywide tree plantation campaign under the New Delhi Municipal Council gathered strong public participation on Sunday, with officials describing it as a growing people’s movement aimed at expanding green cover and promoting environmental responsibility.
The drive was led by NDMC Vice Chairman Kuljeet Singh Chahal at a residential area in Gole Market, where local residents joined hands with civic officials to plant saplings as part of a weekly initiative being carried out across the capital.
The campaign, titled “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam,” has been drawing support from households across New Delhi. Officials said the initiative seeks to connect citizens emotionally with environmental conservation by encouraging them to plant trees in the name of their mothers.
A large number of residents from the Government Employees Residential Welfare Association in Laxmibai Nagar participated in the plantation drive. RWA representatives and local residents actively took part, turning the event into a community-led effort.
Addressing participants, Chahal said the campaign is more than a plantation exercise and reflects a social commitment. He said it encourages people to honour their mothers while fulfilling their responsibility towards nature.
