Traffic eases on Vikas Marg after crackdown, new measures

Traffic flow on East Delhi’s busy Vikas Marg corridor has improved significantly following a series of enforcement and traffic management measures by the Delhi Traffic Police on Sunday.
According to the Traffic Police, average travel time on the stretch has reduced from 20-25 minutes to around 14-15 minutes after sustained action against violations and infrastructure changes.
Vikas Marg is one of the most important arterial roads connecting the Trans-Yamuna areas to Central Delhi. The corridor witnesses heavy traffic due to dense commercial activity, residential colonies, and high pedestrian movement. It is also supported by major metro stations such as Laxmi Nagar, Preet Vihar, and Nirman Vihar.
Officials said the stretch had been facing long-standing issues, including illegal roadside parking, broken central dividers, and congestion caused by multiple feeder lanes merging into the main road. To address these problems, Delhi Traffic Police launched targeted enforcement drives along with structural and regulatory changes.
“Strict enforcement, better coordination with civic agencies, and improved traffic management have led to smoother movement and better road discipline on Vikas Marg,” said Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Vijayanta Goyal Arya.
Over the past two weeks, enforcement teams towed away 198 vehicles parked illegally. Nearly 200 vehicles were also clamped for improper parking, reducing bottlenecks along the corridor. Officials said a total of 11,005 challans have been issued so far in 2026 for violations such as illegal parking and unauthorized e-rickshaw operations. Special drives are also underway to remove encroachments from footpaths.
In addition to enforcement, several traffic management steps have been introduced. Adequate traffic personnel have been deployed at key junctions to regulate movement and prevent congestion. Dedicated cranes have been stationed along the stretch to ensure the quick removal of obstructing vehicles.
Signal systems have also been modified to improve flow. The Laxmi Nagar intersection has been made signal-free, reducing stoppage time for commuters. Meanwhile, the Karkari Mor junction is being redesigned with infrastructure upgrades, including plans for flyovers and underpasses to enable smoother movement.
Authorities have also taken steps to streamline road access. Entry to the Master Plan Road from Karkari Mor has been restricted to prevent wrong-side driving and reduce conflict points.
