Traffic crackdown near India Gate ahead of summer rush

Delhi Traffic Police has intensified a decongestion drive around India Gate and Kartavya Path ahead of the summer season, issuing over 2,200 challans in March and stepping up enforcement against unauthorised parking and traffic violations.
According to official data, a total of 2,253 challans were issued in the India Gate area this month. Of these, 1,720 were for unauthorised parking, 293 were generated through camera-based enforcement (VOCA), 180 vehicles were towed away, and 60 challans were issued for riding without helmets.
The move comes in anticipation of increased footfall from students, families, and tourists visiting the landmark during the summer months. Officials said the drive aims to ensure smooth traffic flow, proper parking, and strict adherence to traffic rules.
As part of the plan, the traffic police is also installing 10 Red-Light Violation Detection (RLVD) cameras at key intersections. These include Mathura Road-Bhairon Marg, Ring Road-Bhairon Road, and Janpath-Tolstoy Marg.
The cameras will automatically capture and penalise vehicles that jump red lights. Officials said the RLVD system will help reduce manual enforcement and improve compliance. “Visitors are advised to follow traffic signals and rules to avoid penalties and ensure a smooth travel experience,” an officer said.
The department has also operationalised the Violation on Camera (VOCA) system in the area. Under this system, traffic personnel can issue challans digitally if a vehicle is found parked in a no-parking zone or abandoned.
