Three major flyover projects approved

Aiming to ensure smooth traffic flow and alleviate congestion in the capital, the Delhi Government has approved major projects covering three key flyovers.
While it plans to build a new flyover on Janakpuri-Pankha Road, the two flyovers in Zakira and Seelampur will undergo comprehensive repair and rehabilitation, PWD minister Parvesh Sahib Singh Verma said on Tuesday. The two flyovers to undergo retrofit are critical, high-load structures, he added.
The approvals reflect the government's balanced infrastructure strategy, creating new capacity where congestion is growing, while undertaking scientific and technology-driven repairs of ageing flyovers to ensure public safety and long-term durability.
As regards the new flyover at Janakpuri Pankha Road, the minister said that to address persistent traffic congestion on one of West Delhi's busiest corridors, the government has approved the engagement of a consultant to conduct a feasibility study and prepare a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for a proposed flyover on Janakpuri Pankha Road from DESU Colony to Janakpuri D-Block.
The DPR will examine traffic volume, road geometry, land availability, engineering feasibility and future mobility requirements.
The exercise is aimed at ensuring that the proposed flyover is need-based, technically sound and future-ready, rather than a short-term traffic management measure. The Janakpuri Pankha Road crossing is one of the busiest stretches and is a key route for people living in Janakpuri and the surrounding areas.
It is also a key road connecting West Delhi to New Delhi and Delhi Cantonment via Cariappa Marg.
Parvesh Sahib Singh said, "We are planning ahead where congestion is rising. Janakpuri Pankha Road needs a permanent, well-designed solution, and this DPR is the first step towards that." Alongside new planning, the PWD has sanctioned Rs 20.18 crore for the repair and rehabilitation of Zakira Flyover, one of Delhi's most critical junctions and a known waterlogging-prone location during the monsoon season.
Zakira Flyover carries heavy daily traffic and has faced structural stress over the years. The approved works include repair of spalled and honeycomb concrete, replacement of expansion joints, replacement of elastomeric bearings and strengthening of girders using CFRP laminate and carbon fibre wrapping, a modern technique used globally to extend the life of bridges and flyovers.
Constructed in the 1970s, the flyover is a critical link, connecting Rohtak Road and Najafgarh Road in outer Delhi. It carries heavy traffic, including a large volume of commercial vehicles from industrial hubs such as Mundka, Nangloi and Anand Parbat, making it one of the busiest freight corridors in the area. The scope of work includes the repair of spalled and honeycombed concrete, replacement of expansion joints and elastomeric bearings and the strengthening of girders.
The project will involve extensive structural repairs, replacement of expansion joints, prestressing of strands, and overall strengthening of the flyover.
We are planning ahead where congestion is rising. Janakpuri Pankha Road needs a permanent, well-designed solution, and this DPR is the first step towards that
