The Bones That Saved the World

The Devas were losing their long war against the Demon Vritra, who could not be killed by any ordinary weapon. Only one thing could defeat him - a weapon made from the bones of a Sage who had willingly given up his body in service of others. The Devas approached the Sage Dadhichi, who lived a simple life of penance, and asked for exactly that.

Dadhichi did not hesitate, did not bargain, did not ask what he would gain. He gave up his life so that his bones could be shaped into the Vajra, the thunderbolt with which Indra finally defeated Vritra and restored peace to the three worlds. He asked for nothing in return - not gratitude, not remembrance, not even a place in the stories that would later be told about him.

We often measure generosity by what we can spare - old clothes, spare change, a little free time. Dadhichi's story asks a harder question: what would we give if it truly cost us something?

Seva does not always demand such extremes. But it does demand the same spirit - giving without calculating the return, without needing to be seen, without asking what remains for us afterward. Today, do one thing for someone that asks nothing in return, not even their thanks.
