Tata to strengthen footprint in UP across AI, clean energy, defence

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Monday met Tata Sons Chairman N Chandrasekaran to review the progress of Tata Group’s existing projects in the State and discussed their expansion and new investment proposals. According to an official Statement, the meeting saw wide-ranging deliberations on long-term cooperation in sectors such as artificial intelligence (AI), information technology, electronics, defence manufacturing, energy, renewable energy, electric vehicles (EVs), tourism, skill development and the digital economy and advanced infrastructure.
A key focus of the engagement was Lucknow’s evolving role as a strategic growth centre, with discussions centred on positioning the city as a Smart AI-enabled hub, anchored in robust digital infrastructure, deep talent pools and institutional scale, supporting the State’s ambition to move up the global technology value chain.
During the meeting, Tata Sons has proposed to develop a World-Class Tata-AI Global Capability Center (GCC) in the State by Tata Sons. In addition, consensus was reached on the expansion of Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) units in Lucknow, Noida and Varanasi. The proposal to increase the workforce at TCS’s Lucknow and Noida units from 16,000 to 30,000 employees is expected to significantly strengthen the State’s digital talent pool.
Recognising Uttar Pradesh’s rapidly growing capabilities in electronics manufacturing, the Tata Group expressed its intent to expand investments in the production of mobile devices, electronic components and other high-tech products. Reference was also made to the Tata Group’s MoU with Intel, with discussions focused on further strengthening the State’s electronics manufacturing ecosystem.
Both sides also agreed to expand collaboration and investment in the manufacturing of electric buses, EVs and new vehicle models, supporting Uttar Pradesh’s clean mobility and sustainable development goals. The meeting included detailed deliberations on the Uttar Pradesh Defence Industrial Corridor. The Tata Group proposed increased investments in the manufacturing of drones, missiles and defence vehicles across various defence industrial nodes in the State, including Jhansi.
Sharing updates on project expansion under the Bundelkhand Industrial Development Authority (BIDA) in Jhansi, the Tata Group assured full support in alignment with the Chief Minister’s vision and the State’s defence priorities.
Government-led construction of first-phase of Museum of Temple Architecture at Ayodhya is progressing as planned, with completion targeted by January 2027, marking a major milestone in the State’s cultural and heritage development roadmap.
The meeting also discussed about progress of Centre of Excellence in collaboration with IIT Kanpur being built in Gorakhpur, with a proposed investment of Rs48 crore. This centre focuses on AI, cybersecurity, drones, 3D printing and space technologies. The initiative places strong emphasis on youth skilling, particularly across Eastern Uttar Pradesh. Additionally, Tata Sons has taken up the rejuvenation of eight kunds in the Mathura–Vrindavan region, with work expected to commence in December 2025, contributing to heritage conservation and cultural revitalisation.
The engagement underscored a shared commitment to execution-led governance, where employment generation, technology adoption and institutional development advance in tandem, positioning Lucknow as a central driver of Uttar Pradesh’s next phase of transformation.
