Tamil Nadu makes Physical Education mandatory for classes 6 to 12

The Tamil Nadu School Education Department has made physical education (PE) classes compulsory for students from Classes 6 to 12 in all schools across the state.
The directive instructs education officials to ensure that PE sessions are conducted regularly and without interruption, highlighting the government's focus on student health, fitness, and overall development.
Authorities have also been asked to submit details of schools where playgrounds and sports facilities are not being fully utilized.
The move aims to encourage schools to make better use of existing infrastructure and provide students with more opportunities to participate in sports and physical activities.
The government believes that regular physical education can improve fitness levels, teamwork, discipline, and mental well-being among students.
The decision is part of Tamil Nadu's broader effort to promote holistic education by balancing academics with physical activity.
Education experts have welcomed the initiative, noting that sports and exercise play a vital role in the overall growth and development of children. Schools are expected to implement the directive from the current academic session onwards.
