Uttarakhand Cabinet clears Ganga Expressway extension to Haridwar
The Uttarakhand Cabinet on Friday approved a proposal to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Uttar Pradesh Government for extending the Ganga Expressway from Meerut to Haridwar.
Briefing reporters after the Cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, Director General of Information and Additional Secretary to the Chief Minister Banshidhar Tiwari said the two states would work on the project’s framework and implementation after the MoU is signed.
He said the project would strengthen connectivity between the two states and give a boost to religious tourism, industrial investment, trade and employment.
The 594-km Ganga Expressway, currently under construction between Meerut and Prayagraj, is among Uttar Pradesh’s flagship infrastructure projects. Once completed, it is expected to significantly reduce travel time between western and eastern Uttar Pradesh while improving freight movement and logistics.
According to the Uttarakhand government, extending the expressway to Haridwar will provide the state with direct connectivity to the country’s expressway network.
The Government said the project would improve connectivity for pilgrims visiting Haridwar and those travelling on the Char Dham Yatra, besides creating fresh opportunities for industrial investment, trade and employment.
In another decision, the Cabinet approved a proposal to transfer around 30 hectares of land, out of the 73 hectares of forest land available in Haldwani’s Lamachaur area, for the construction of the Uttarakhand High Court complex.
