SUV crash kills toddler in Alipur, driver flees

A two-year-old girl died after being thrown out of a car when a speeding SUV rammed into it from behind in Outer North Delhi’s Alipur area. The driver of the SUV fled the scene after the collision, abandoning the vehicle.
The accident took place around 2 pm on Sunday near a traffic signal on GTK Road. According to police, the SUV, identified as a Toyota Fortuner, was allegedly being driven at a high speed of around 100 to 120 km/h when it hit a Maruti Celerio carrying six occupants, including two children.
The impact of the collision was severe. Police said the smaller car spun out of control and crashed into a road divider. The force of the crash caused the toddler, identified as Devanshi, to be thrown out of the vehicle through an open window.
A senior police officer said the child was seated on the lap of her mother’s friend in the front passenger seat. The window was open because the air conditioning system of the car was not working. The sudden impact caused her to be ejected from the vehicle and fall onto the road. The child suffered critical head injuries and was immediately rushed to Satyawadi Raja Harish Chandra Hospital in Narela. Doctors declared her dead on arrival, police said.
The car was being driven by Arti, the mother of the deceased child. She was travelling with her two toddlers, along with Ravindra Singh, 47, his son Deepak, and his daughter Jyoti. The group was returning from Rani Khera at the time of the incident.
In his statement to police, complainant Ravindra Singh, a resident of Sonipat in Haryana, said the windows of the car were open due to a malfunctioning air conditioning system. He stated that his daughter, Jyoti, was holding the child when the speeding SUV struck their vehicle from behind.
Police said the collision occurred just as the traffic signal turned green. The sudden impact caused the car to lose balance and spin before hitting the divider. Following the accident, the SUV driver fled the scene, leaving the vehicle behind. Police have seized both the damaged vehicles and initiated efforts to identify and trace the accused driver.
Ravindra Singh and Arti also sustained injuries in the incident. They were taken to the hospital for treatment and are reported to be stable. Police teams reached the spot soon after receiving information and carried out a detailed inspection. A crime team was also called to examine the scene and collect evidence as part of the investigation.
An FIR has been registered under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Officials said CCTV footage from the area is being analysed to track the movement of the SUV before and after the accident. “We are trying to identify how the driver escaped from the scene and whether he used any public or private transport to flee,” an officer said.
Police said efforts are ongoing to locate the accused and ascertain the exact sequence of events that led to the fatal crash.
