Supreme Court Upholds ECI’s Special Intensive Revision Exercise in Bihar and Other States

The Supreme Court has upheld the Election Commission of India’s (ECI) Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise in Bihar, West Bengal, and other states, stating that the poll body acted within its legal authority. The court observed that the ECI did not exceed its statutory powers while carrying out the voter roll revision process.
The court clarified that the SIR exercise cannot be considered invalid simply because it differs from the usual or traditional process of updating voter lists. According to the judges, the Election Commission has the authority to adopt methods that help maintain accurate and updated electoral rolls, as long as such actions remain within the framework of the law.
The ruling came amid debates and legal challenges over the revision process, with concerns raised by some groups regarding its implementation and impact. However, the Supreme Court emphasized that maintaining correct and transparent voter lists is directly linked to conducting free and fair elections in the country.
The judgment is considered significant as it strengthens the Election Commission’s powers in carrying out voter verification and electoral roll updates ahead of future elections.
