Summer power demand likely to cross 9,000 MW

With temperatures increasing and signalling hot summers, Delhi is expected to witness peak power demand of nearly 9,000MW this year. The figure stood at 8,442 MW last year.
Peak power demand in BRPL’s area of South and West Delhi, which had clocked 3798 MW during the summers of 2025, is expected to reach around 3997 MW during the summers of 2026.
On the other hand, in BYPL’s area of East and Central Delhi, the peak power demand, which had reached 1824 MW during the summers of 2025, is expected to touch around 1991 MW this year.
BSES discoms are geared up to ensure a reliable power supply to meet the power demand of more than 53 lakh consumers and nearly 2.25 crore residents in South, West, East and Central Delhi.
These arrangements include long-term PPAs, bilateral arrangements, banking arrangements with other states and deployment of the latest technologies like AI and ML for predicting power demand accurately, which is critical for ensuring a reliable power supply.
Delhi’s peak power demand had breached the 7000 MW mark for the first time — peaking at 7016 MW in 2018. The expected peak power demand of over 9000 MW represents an increase of over 300 per cent over the peak power demand of 2879 MW in 2002.
Based on current demand growth trends, Delhi’s peak power demand is likely to cross the 10,000 MW mark by around 2028-2029, depending on weather conditions and demand growth.
BSES has also made power banking arrangements with utilities in other states to meet peak summer demand.
