Speeding luxury SUV kills one
A 23-year-old was killed and two others were injured on Nelson Mandela Marg late Saturday after being hit by a speeding luxury vehicle. The victims were waiting at an auto stand. The police has arrested the driver of the Mercedes G63 involved in the accident.
The victims worked at a restaurant in Ambience Mall. They were waiting for transport after their shift, when the accident took place. The police rushed them to hospital. Doctors declared Rohit, 23, a resident of Chamoli in Uttarakhand, brought dead. The other two, aged 35 and 23, are under treatment.
Police have identified the driver as Shivam, 29, a resident of Karol Bagh. He was returning home with his wife and elder brother after attending a wedding. The car belonged to a friend. The police claim initial probe shows that the vehicle lost balance due to a diversion on the stretch. It then hit a pole and rammed into the three men standing nearby.
The crash has again raised questions on late-night speeding on wide South Delhi roads. Residents say diversions and poor visibility often become deadly for pedestrians and workers who depend on public transport at odd hours.
When police reached the site, they found the front of the Mercedes crushed against the pole. Debris was scattered across the lane. The victims’ belongings, including work bags, were found some distance away, showing the force of the impact. Officers documented the scene and began taking statements from eyewitnesses.
