Siddaramaiah to step down as Karnataka CM, DK Shivakumar likely successor after high-stakes breakfast meeting

Amid major political developments in Karnataka, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah is reported to have informed his cabinet colleagues that he will step down from his position, according to official sources.
The announcement was made during a breakfast meeting hosted at his residence in Bengaluru on May 28, 2026, which was attended by Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar and other senior cabinet ministers. The meeting is being seen as a key moment in the ongoing leadership transition within the state Congress government.
Sources said the decision was conveyed in a cordial atmosphere, with Siddaramaiah expressing gratitude to his colleagues for their support during his tenure. In symbolic gestures that marked the emotional tone of the meeting, Siddaramaiah was seen hugging Shivakumar, while Shivakumar was also seen touching the Chief Minister’s feet and seeking his blessings.
The Congress high command is believed to have directed Siddaramaiah to move to the Rajya Sabha, thereby paving the way for a change in leadership. A Congress Legislative Party (CLP) meeting is expected to be held on May 29, where the next Chief Minister may be formally decided.
Supporters of DK Shivakumar gathered outside his residence earlier in the day, distributing sweets and raising slogans in anticipation of his elevation to the top post. Some supporters even declared confidence that Shivakumar would soon take over as Chief Minister.
Meanwhile, senior minister G. Parameshwara indicated that the breakfast meeting was also meant as a farewell gesture by the Chief Minister, though no official resignation has yet been formally announced or submitted to the Governor.
The political situation continues to evolve, with party leaders from the Congress central leadership expected to arrive in Bengaluru to oversee the transition process and maintain internal coordination.
