Delhi Police trace SUV linked to Hindu College student's harassment

Delhi Police have traced the SUV allegedly involved in an incident in which a Hindu College student and her friend were allegedly harassed in northwest Delhi's Mukherjee Nagar, officials said on Friday.

The student told police that she and her friend were walking through the area on Wednesday night when a white SUV approached them. The men inside allegedly made comments at the two women. When they objected, the men allegedly abused them and continued to follow them.

The student said she and her friend stopped to film the incident, following which the men also stopped and allegedly tried to pull them into the vehicle. The group fled after the woman's friend began recording the SUV.

Police registered an FIR at Mukherjee Nagar police station based on the student's complaint. The case was filed under sections 78 (stalking), 79 (word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman) and 3(5) (common intention) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Northwest) Akansha Yadav said an investigation was launched after the complaint and the vehicle allegedly involved in the incident was subsequently traced.

Police identified the driver as Naman, a Delhi University student. Two to three other people were allegedly travelling with him at the time, police said.

Investigators are also looking into the student's claim that she and her friend went to several police stations before their complaint was eventually registered.  (with inputs from PTI)
