Fire guts four shops at Assam market, damages property worth Rs 70 lakh

A fire broke out at a market in Assam's Golaghat district in the early hours of Friday, gutting four shops and damaging property estimated at around Rs 70 lakh, police said.

The fire was noticed around 1 am at the market in Bokakhat and soon spread to nearby establishments, including a garage, computer shop, salon and hotel, they said.

According to police, 15 motorcycles kept inside the garage were also destroyed in the blaze.

As a precautionary measure and to prevent the fire from spreading, local residents disconnected electricity connections in the area.

The cause of the fire is yet to be determined, an official said.  (with inputs from PTI)
