Rain Prediction

Long before modern meteorology, ancient Indian scholars built systematic frameworks to anticipate the monsoon. The Krishi Parashara (traditionally dated to 400 BCE, though some scholars place it between the 6th and 11th centuries CE) details astrological and meteorological indicators for forecasting monsoon rains. It advises farmers to observe wind direction daily using a rod with a flag to forecast rainfall, blending astronomical observation with practical field guidance. It also contains specific instructions for seed collection, preservation and optimal sowing times.

Codifying the Seasons

Varahamihira’s Brihat Samhita (6th century CE) dedicated entire chapters to predicting monsoon patterns based on which nakshatra the moon occupied during specific seasons. It highlighted the vital role of monsoon rains in ensuring agricultural prosperity and food security.

State-Organised Planning

Kautilya’s Arthashastra (4th century BCE-3rd century CE) institutionalised this knowledge: the Sitadhyaksha (superintendent of agriculture) was tasked with seed preservation, irrigation oversight, regulation of manure and seasonal planning.

A Living Legacy

This astro-meteorological tradition was transmitted through the Krishi Panchang, structured by agricultural seasons and tailored to local climate, soil and cropping patterns, that rural Bharat still follows.
