Manipur CM visits slain musician Vikram Singh family, promises justice

Manipur Chief Minister Y Khemchand Singh on Thursday assured the family of slain musician Chongtham Vikram Singh that justice would be delivered and those responsible for his death would be brought to book, an official statement said.

Singh made the assurance during a visit to Chongtham’s residence at Thangmeiband in Imphal West district.

Speaking to the bereaved family, the chief minister expressed “profound sorrow over the incident”, describing Chongtham as an “innocent person who had done no wrong”.

Singh met Chongtham’s parents, wife and son and assured them of all possible assistance and support from the state government.

The 54-year-old musician was allegedly beaten to death after he objected to noise from a dhaba outside his home in Delhi’s Kilokari area on Tuesday.

Delhi Police have arrested seven men and detained a juvenile in connection with the case.

Chongtham had lived in Kilokari for more than two decades and was a well-known musician and guitarist.

He was the lead guitarist of Manipur rock band Phoenix in the early 1980s and later worked as a music teacher and performer in Delhi.

The musician’s death has drawn concern in Manipur, where his family received his remains after the killing in Delhi. His last rites were performed at his family home in Imphal.
