Delhi Police deploys 15,000 personnel, 200 paramilitary companies for BRICS Summit
Delhi Police has put in place a multi-layered security system for the upcoming BRICS Summit, with around 15,000 personnel and 200 companies of paramilitary forces to be deployed across the national capital, a senior police officer said on Thursday.
More than 500 CCTV cameras, including 4K high-resolution, facial recognition and vehicle number plate-reading cameras, have also been installed to maintain round-the-clock surveillance of key areas, officials said.
Manish Kumar Agrawal, Special Commissioner of Police (Protective/Security Division), said the arrangements were aimed at ensuring maximum security for visiting dignitaries while causing minimum inconvenience to the public.
“We have made elaborate bandobast by ensuring minimum inconvenience to the public. We have also issued advance advisories regarding traffic arrangements,” Agrawal said.
He said Delhi Police was working closely with multiple agencies and had already conducted extensive surveys of all identified routes. Security arrangements will cover the airport, hotels, Bharat Mandapam and other locations that may be visited by foreign dignitaries.
The BRICS Summit is scheduled to be held at Bharat Mandapam on September 12 and 13. Traffic restrictions linked to the movement of foreign delegations and dignitaries are expected to begin from September 10 and continue until around September 14, officials said.
In the New Delhi zone, the surveillance network will comprise more than 500 cameras connected to a central monitoring room. These include 4K and 2K cameras, facial recognition system cameras and automatic number plate recognition cameras.
Police said preventive policing and real-time assessment of intelligence inputs were also being prioritised, with information shared among agencies and necessary action taken based on the inputs received.
At Bharat Mandapam, enhanced access control, surveillance, vigilance and emergency response mechanisms have been put in place. Similar arrangements have been strengthened at hotels where foreign dignitaries will stay.
Delhi Police has also held coordination meetings with neighbouring states to ensure seamless security during the movement of dignitaries.
The security preparations involve the Ministry of Home Affairs, Ministry of External Affairs, Ministry of Commerce, National Security Guard, Intelligence Bureau and Central Armed Police Forces, among other agencies.
Traffic personnel will be deployed at key intersections and important routes to regulate vehicular movement and facilitate the movement of VVIP convoys.
