Indian Railways to launch upgraded reservation system in August

Indian Railways is set to roll out a major upgrade to its Passenger Reservation System (PRS) from August, introducing enhanced booking capacity, artificial intelligence-based waitlist predictions, and a more seamless ticket booking experience for passengers.
The upgraded system will gradually replace the existing reservation platform, which has been in operation since 1986. Railway officials say the modernization aims to improve efficiency, accommodate growing online demand, and make railway services more user-friendly.
Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw recently reviewed the progress of the project and directed officials to ensure that the transition takes place smoothly without causing inconvenience to passengers.
With nearly 88% of railway ticket bookings now taking place through digital channels, the new system has been designed using modern technology capable of handling significantly higher transaction volumes than the current platform.
A key feature of the upgraded reservation system is its AI-powered waitlist prediction tool, which estimates the probability of waitlisted tickets being confirmed. According to railway officials, the accuracy of these predictions has improved substantially, helping passengers make more informed travel plans.
The upgrade is part of Indian Railways’ broader digital transformation strategy. The RailOne app, launched in 2025, has witnessed rapid adoption and now enables users to book tickets, check train status, access coach and platform information, cancel reservations, and submit complaints through a single platform.
Railways data shows that lakhs of passengers use digital services daily for both reserved and unreserved ticket bookings, reflecting the growing reliance on online railway services across the country.
Officials believe the new Passenger Reservation System will significantly enhance booking speed, reliability, and user experience for millions of rail travellers.
