FIFA Referees Chief defends VAR integrity amid Egypt-Argentina controversy

FIFA's Head of Refereeing, Pierluigi Collina, has defended the integrity and independence of match officials amid the controversy surrounding the use of VAR during the Egypt-Argentina match, asserting that referees cannot be influenced by external pressure.

Collina's remarks came after criticism from French referee François Letexier, who reportedly raised concerns following the controversial VAR decisions during the match. Addressing the issue, Collina stressed that FIFA's refereeing team operates independently and that every decision is taken in accordance with the Laws of the Game.

"Nobody can influence us," Collina said, reiterating FIFA's commitment to transparency, neutrality and consistency in officiating. He added that all VAR interventions are thoroughly reviewed to ensure fairness and maintain the credibility of the game.

The Egypt-Argentina encounter sparked intense debate among players, officials and fans over key decisions reviewed through the Video Assistant Referee system, prompting widespread discussion about the application of VAR in international football.

Collina acknowledged that while controversial decisions are an inevitable part of football, FIFA remains focused on improving officiating standards through training, technology and continuous assessment of referees.

The governing body has maintained that VAR is intended to minimise clear and obvious errors rather than eliminate every contentious decision, and officials will continue to refine its implementation in major international tournaments.
