Karnataka clears 8.82 lakh pending traffic E-Challans, collects Rs 26.37 crore in 18 days

The Karnataka government has settled more than 8.82 lakh pending traffic e-challan cases in just 18 days after introducing a 50 per cent concession on traffic fines, collecting over Rs 26.37 crore under the scheme.

The concession, which came into effect on June 21, applies to pending traffic e-challans registered by the Police Department. The initiative was launched to reduce the backlog of unpaid traffic violations, ease the burden on courts and encourage motorists to clear long-pending dues.

According to official data, 8,82,290 pending e-challan cases were settled between June 21 and July 8, generating Rs 26,37,79,300 in revenue for the state.

Karnataka has long struggled with a large number of unpaid traffic fines, particularly in Bengaluru, where crores of rupees worth of e-challans remained pending due to accumulated penalties and interest. The government introduced the one-time amnesty scheme to improve compliance and expedite case disposal.

Officials described the public response as encouraging and urged motorists with pending e-challans to take advantage of the concession before the scheme ends. They warned that once the deadline expires, full fines, additional penalties and legal action may apply.

Similar traffic fine settlement schemes have previously been implemented in states such as Maharashtra, Delhi and Telangana to speed up the disposal of pending traffic violation cases.
