Delhi school bus driver held for sexually abusing three-year-old nursery student

A school bus driver has been arrested for allegedly sexually abusing a three-year-old nursery student at a private school in Delhi's Bawana area police said.

The case came to light on 19 August after the child's family noticed injuries to her private parts. When questioned the child allegedly told her mother about a "bad uncle" at the school who had been giving her chocolates.

On 24 August the child was shown photographs and CCTV footage from the school during which she identified the accused police said. An FIR was registered under relevant provisions of the POCSO Act and the accused was arrested from the school premises.

The accused had been driving a school bus for around eight months and allegedly followed the child into a bathroom before abusing her. A senior police officer said preliminary investigation suggested the child had been abused on four occasions.

Police have seized the accused's mobile phone which contained videos showing him giving chocolates to young children as well as CCTV footage from across the school premises.

Reacting to the case AAP leader Saurabh Bharadwaj criticised Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta accusing her of a cold and insensitive response to a series of child sexual abuse cases reported from the capital. In a post on X he referred to recent incidents involving young children in the city and said that while he was not holding the chief minister personally responsible her reaction to such cases had been insensitive.

Bharadwaj also accused Gupta of not meeting the parents of a three-year-old child allegedly assaulted by a head clerk at a private school in Janakpuri and claimed her government had failed to register an FIR against the school's management despite an inquiry report showing serious POCSO violations. He alleged the BJP was backing social media influencers running campaigns favourable to the accused in such cases.
