Delhi fire incidents jump 73 per cent in April; 32 deaths reported in four months, says DFS data

Fire-related emergencies in Delhi saw a sharp rise in April 2026, increasing by 73% compared to March, according to the Delhi Fire Services (DFS) call summary. The capital recorded 2,663 fire calls in April alone, significantly higher than previous months, pushing the total to 6,693 fire incidents in the first 4 months of the year.

Officials attributed the surge to rising temperatures and an increase in garbage and dry waste fires across the city. April also recorded the highest number of rescue operations, with 261 lives saved during the month.

Between January and April, 32 people lost their lives in fire-related incidents, with March recording the highest monthly toll at 15 deaths. In a recent incident in May, a major fire in East Delhi’s Vivek Vihar claimed nine lives, including a toddler, reportedly triggered by an air-conditioner blast.

Despite the rising incidents, DFS personnel rescued over 837 people during the period and also saved thousands of animals and birds through emergency operations.
