West Bengal Assembly Election Results 2026 LIVE Updates: BJP crosses 200-seat mark as Trinamool faces major setback

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has crossed the 200-seat mark in the West Bengal Assembly Election Results 2026, moving well beyond the halfway majority threshold of 148 seats, according to the latest counting trends.

The ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC), led by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, is facing a significant setback and is trailing far behind in early results, in what is shaping up to be a major political shift in the state after 15 years of TMC rule.

Key highlights from West Bengal results 2026

The BJP has already secured 11 seats and is leading in 189 constituencies, while the TMC is struggling to maintain double-digit leads as counting progresses across 293 seats.

Counting was briefly disrupted in Bhabanipur after an individual entered the counting centre with a mobile phone, but resumed after the device was confiscated, according to Election Commission officials.

In Asansol, tensions were reported after a Trinamool Congress party office was allegedly vandalised and set on fire during counting.

BJP candidate Agnimitra Paul also registered a decisive win in Asansol Dakshin, defeating her TMC rival by over 40,000 votes.

Political backdrop

The West Bengal election was held in two phases on April 23 and April 29, with repolling in select booths including Falta.

The contest is seen as a direct battle between Mamata Banerjee’s TMC and the BJP, led politically on the ground by Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari, who has also challenged Banerjee in Bhabanipur.

Other key players include the Congress, the Left Front, and a new party floated by suspended TMC MLA Humayun Kabir.

Assembly arithmetic

West Bengal has 294 assembly seats, and a party needs 148 to form the government.

In the 2021 elections, TMC had won 215 seats, while the BJP emerged as the principal opposition with 77 seats. The Congress and Left failed to win any seats.

This election saw record voter turnout, but also controversy over voter list revisions under the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise.
