MCD Allocates ₹48 Crore to Boost Garbage Collection and Sanitation Across Delhi Zones

The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has approved an allocation of Rs. 48 crore to strengthen waste management and sanitation services across multiple zones in the city for the financial year 2026–27, according to an official order.
The directive, issued on April 27 and cleared by the MCD Commissioner, aims to improve garbage collection, lifting, and transportation through the deployment of additional vehicles, machinery, and manpower across various wards.
Under the plan, the West Zone will receive 50 light motor vehicles equipped with auto-tipping systems, along with 30 medium vehicles and backhoe loaders to enhance garbage removal operations.
In Shahdara (South), 52 vehicles including tipper trucks and loaders will be deployed along with sanitation workers for handling mixed waste over a six-month period. The Najafgarh Zone will see the introduction of CNG-operated vehicles, HYVA trucks, and loaders for clearing garbage and silt from roads and footpaths.
Similar sanitation upgrades have been planned for Central, Shahdara (North), South, Narela, Keshavpuram, Rohini, and Civil Lines zones. The focus will remain on improving cleanliness at garbage-prone locations and designated sanitation target areas.
Officials stated that the MCD currently handles around 13,000 metric tonnes of waste daily, which can rise to over 15,000 metric tonnes during large-scale cleanliness drives.
The civic body has granted in-principle approval for sanitation works across 10 zones and allowed them to issue separate tenders. Administrative approval and expenditure sanctions have also been granted based on estimated project costs.
The order further permits the preparation of estimates and issuance of short-term tenders to speed up implementation of the sanitation improvement plan.
