Centre tells Supreme Court it will bring back five deported individuals for citizenship verification

The Central Government informed the Supreme Court that it will bring back five individuals who were previously deported to Bangladesh and verify their citizenship claims before taking any further action.
The assurance was given during a hearing related to a legal challenge over the deportation of Bengali-speaking individuals suspected of being foreign nationals.
Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing on behalf of the Centre, told a bench led by Chief Justice Surya Kant that the decision had been taken considering the specific circumstances of the case. He stated that the individuals would be brought back to India and their citizenship status would be examined before any future steps are taken.
The government also clarified that this decision should not be treated as a precedent for similar cases.
The matter relates to an earlier Calcutta High Court order that directed the government to bring back six individuals who had been deported to Bangladesh in 2025.
One of them, Sunali Khatun, had already returned to India earlier on humanitarian grounds along with her child after intervention by the Supreme Court.
The Supreme Court recorded the Centre’s statement and scheduled the matter for further hearing.
The case has generated attention because it raises important questions regarding citizenship verification, due process, and legal safeguards before deportation decisions are made.
