Bhupen Hazarika is an emotion that lives in Assam’s heart and soul : CM Himanta

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday described legendary singer-composer Bhupen Hazarika as an emotion that lives in the heart and soul of the people of Assam, as the state marked his birth anniversary.

In a post on X, Sarma said Hazarika’s timeless music and profound words continued to inspire generations.

“Dr Bhupen Hazarika is more than a name; he is an emotion that lives in the heart and soul of Assam. His timeless music and profound words continue to inspire generations,” Sarma said.

He said the year-long nationwide celebrations marking Hazarika’s birth centenary had reaffirmed the enduring legacy of the “Bard of the Brahmaputra”, whose voice carried Assam’s spirit, stories and dreams far beyond the State.

Sarma is scheduled to attend a special programme organised by the Directorate of Cultural Affairs at Bhupen Hazarika Samanway Tirtha in Guwahati to mark the birth centenary of the legendary musician.

The year-long celebrations began last year with Prime Minister Narendra Modi attending a special tribute programme for Hazarika.

On the occasion, Modi also released a commemorative ₹100 coin issued by the Reserve Bank of India and a biography titled Bharat Ratna Bhupen Hazarika.

Hazarika was born on September 8, 1926, at Sadiya in Assam’s Tinsukia district. He died in Mumbai on November 5, 2011, and was posthumously awarded the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian honour, in 2019.
