BCI seeks report from West Bengal Bar Council on Mamata Banerjee’s legal practice status

The Bar Council of India (BCI) has sought a detailed report from the West Bengal Bar Council regarding the enrolment and practice status of former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, following her appearance before the Calcutta High Court in a lawyer’s attire.

In a communication issued on Thursday, the BCI directed the state Bar Council to submit complete records within 48 hours related to Banerjee’s enrolment as an advocate, along with details of her practice status during and after her tenure as Chief Minister from 2011 to 2026.

The matter came under scrutiny after Banerjee was seen appearing in the Calcutta High Court earlier in the day, dressed in a lawyer’s gown and advocating in a case related to alleged post-poll violence and attacks on party offices.

The BCI noted media reports about her courtroom appearance and sought clarification on whether she had validly resumed legal practice after holding constitutional office.

The council’s letter stated that individuals holding constitutional posts are generally required to suspend their bar licence during their tenure and formally reactivate it before resuming practice.

While requesting verification, the BCI clarified that it was not making any observation on the legality of her court appearance at this stage, but was only seeking factual details regarding her enrolment, suspension, and any subsequent resumption of practice.

The development has triggered attention in legal and political circles as the West Bengal Bar Council is expected to submit its report within two days.
