Assam Government to introduce Uniform Civil Code Bill in Assembly on May 26

The Assam Government will introduce the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Bill in the State Assembly on May 26, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced after chairing the first Cabinet meeting of his second term.

He said a special session of the Assam Assembly will be held from May 21 to May 26, during which newly elected MLAs will take oath. The UCC Bill will be tabled on the final day of the session.

The proposed legislation is expected to cover issues such as the legal age of marriage, polygamy, inheritance, and live-in relationships. However, the Chief Minister clarified that religious practices will remain outside the scope of the Bill.

Sarma also said that tribal communities in both hill and plain regions of Assam will be exempted from the provisions of the proposed law.

The state Cabinet has already approved the draft Bill, making Assam the third state after Uttarakhand and Gujarat to bring a Uniform Civil Code proposal before the legislature.

The move is expected to trigger significant political and legal debate, given the sensitivity of personal laws and cultural practices in the state.
