Assam Election Results 2026 Live BJP Nears Majority Gaurav Gogoi Loses Jorhat Seat

Counting of votes for the Assam Assembly Elections 2026 is underway, with the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) racing towards a decisive victory.
According to early trends released by the Election Commission of India, the NDA is leading in 99 out of 126 Assembly seats, putting it close to a comfortable majority in the state.
In a major political development, Gaurav Gogoi has lost from the Jorhat constituency, marking a setback for the Congress in a high-profile contest. Gogoi, who was aiming to make his debut in state politics, failed to secure the seat amid the BJP’s strong performance.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma is leading from his stronghold Jalukbari and is on course for a third consecutive term. The NDA alliance, comprising the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), and Bodo People’s Front (BPF), has maintained a steady lead across multiple constituencies.
Other key players in the fray include Badruddin Ajmal contesting from Binnakandi, and Akhil Gogoi seeking to retain his seat in Sibsagar. Assembly Speaker Biswajit Daimary is also in the race from Tamulpur.
The elections saw participation from 722 candidates across 126 constituencies, with counting taking place at 40 centres spread across 35 districts.
Assam recorded a significant voter turnout of 85.91%, including a record 86.5% turnout among women voters, reflecting strong electoral participation.
Exit polls had earlier predicted a landslide victory for the NDA, estimating between 88 and 100 seats, while the Congress-led alliance was expected to lag behind.
As counting continues, the trends suggest a clear advantage for the ruling alliance, though final results are awaited to confirm the outcome.
