Amit Shah reviews India’s 2030 Commonwealth Games, 2036 Olympics plans

Home Minister Amit Shah on Thursday reviewed India’s preparations to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games and also discussed the country’s bid to host the 2036 Olympic Games at a meeting in Ahmedabad.

Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya and Gujarat Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi also attended the review meeting, which focused on preparations for the upcoming international sporting events.

Shah said the Narendra Modi government was committed to positioning India as a global sporting destination by hosting major international competitions.

“Modi Govt is firmly committed to establishing India as a global sporting destination by hosting international sporting events,” Shah said in a post on X, adding that he chaired a meeting to review India’s 2036 Olympic bid as well as preparations for the 2029 Police and Fire Games and the 2030 Commonwealth Games in Ahmedabad.

The Union Home Ministry is expected to play a key role in the organisation of the Games, particularly in overseeing security arrangements and other logistical requirements.

The 2030 Commonwealth Games will mark India's return as host after two decades. Ahmedabad has been selected as the host city, while Delhi hosted the event in 2010, becoming the first Indian city to stage the Commonwealth Games.

Ahmedabad is also India's proposed city for the 2036 Olympic Games. Sanghavi, who also holds the sports portfolio in Gujarat, has been involved in the city's engagements with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) over the bid.

India is currently in the Continuous Dialogue stage of the IOC's Olympic host selection process. A final decision on the host of the 2036 Games is not expected before 2029.

Before the Commonwealth Games and a potential Olympic Games, Ahmedabad is scheduled to host the 2029 World Police and Fire Games. The event is expected to bring nearly 10,000 athletes from around 70 countries and would be the city's first major international multi-sport competition.

The review comes as India steps up preparations for a series of major sporting events, with security, infrastructure and logistical planning expected to remain central to the country's efforts to establish itself as a destination for global sporting competitions.
