Shikhar Dhawan appointed brand ambassador for Delhi’s Khel Mahakumbh

International cricketer Shikhar Dhawan has been appointed brand ambassador of the Delhi Government’s flagship sports initiative, Delhi Khel Mahakumbh. The sports event is scheduled to begin on February 13, 2026. The announcement was made on Tuesday after a meeting between Dhawan, Delhi Education Minister Ashish Sood, and Chief Minister Rekha Gupta.
The Delhi Government said the association with Dhawan, one of the country’s most recognisable sporting figures and a native of the Capital, is aimed at energising grassroots sports and motivating young athletes across the city. The Delhi Khel Mahakumbh is envisioned as a large-scale platform to identify, nurture, and showcase sporting talent among children and youth.
Education Minister Ashish Sood said the decision reflects the government’s focus on building a strong sporting ecosystem in the city. “After seeing the Delhi Government’s commitment towards sports, Shikhar Dhawan voluntarily decided to take up the responsibility of being the brand ambassador. We are confident that his guidance and inspiration will give new energy, self-confidence, and recognition to young players of Delhi,” Sood said.
Officials said Dhawan will be actively associated with the event from the inaugural ceremony through its entire duration. His presence is expected to encourage participants and underline the importance of discipline, dedication, and perseverance in sports. The government believes that Dhawan’s journey from Delhi’s local grounds to international cricket makes him a relatable role model for aspiring athletes.
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, who was present during the meeting, expressed gratitude to the cricketer for associating himself with the initiative. She appreciated his willingness to stay connected with his roots and contribute to the development of sports in the Capital. The government said the partnership symbolises a broader effort to integrate accomplished sportspersons into public initiatives aimed at youth development.
Speaking on the occasion, Shikhar Dhawan said he was honoured to be named the brand ambassador of the Delhi Khel Mahakumbh. “Delhi has given me so much. I am always ready to serve this soil,” he said. He described the initiative as a strong platform for the city’s youth to perform and excel in sports.
Dhawan said he fully supports the government’s efforts to promote sports and assured that he would contribute in every possible way. “Whatever I can give back to sports, I will give my full effort. I am very happy that the Delhi Government has taken such a wonderful initiative for young players,” he said. Officials said that the event is set to commence later this week, and preparations are underway to ensure wide participation and smooth conduct. Shikhar Dhawan voluntarily decided to take up the responsibility of being the brand ambassador.
