Shift to skill-based education: LG to universities

Delhi Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu on Friday asked heads of state universities in the capital to shift focus from theoretical learning to skill-based education, stressing the need to improve employability among students.
During an interaction with vice-chancellors and directors of state universities, Sandhu emphasised that academic institutions must align education with industry needs, particularly in emerging sectors. “Education is critical for the future of our youth and the nation,” Sandhu said, referring to the broader vision of a developed India. He underlined the importance of equipping students with practical skills alongside degrees.
He advised academic leaders to prioritise application-based learning, especially in areas such as Artificial Intelligence and cybersecurity. Officials said the discussion focused on bridging the gap between academic training and job market requirements. Sandhu also directed universities to prepare concrete and time-bound action plans, which will be reviewed in the next meeting.
The move signals a push for measurable reforms in higher education institutions across Delhi. He further encouraged universities to build partnerships with international academic institutions and industries. Such collaborations, he said, would help improve capabilities and enhance global competitiveness. The meeting forms part of a broader effort by the lieutenant governor’s office to engage with key sectors and push policy-driven changes.
Earlier in the day, Sandhu met Prime Minister Narendra Modi. While details of the meeting were not disclosed, it is understood that issues concerning Delhi were discussed. He also held a meeting with Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw at the latter’s residence. The two discussed a range of matters related to the city, including infrastructure and technology. Separately, Leader of Opposition in the Delhi Assembly, Atishi, called on the Lieutenant Governor at Lok Niwas. The meeting was part of routine political outreach, officials said.
In another engagement, Punjab State Information Commissioner and author Harpreet Singh Sandhu, along with German NRI Rajinder Singh Johal, met Sandhu at his residence.
Officials said these interactions reflect ongoing consultations and outreach by the Lieutenant Governor with political leaders, policymakers, and members of the public.
The emphasis, however, remained on education reform during the day, with Sandhu highlighting the need for universities to evolve in line with changing economic and technological demands. By asking institutions to move beyond conventional teaching models and focus on employability, the administration is looking to address concerns around job readiness among graduates.
