Sanjay Raut calls Tamil Nadu Governor’s decision on TVK government formation “unconstitutional”

MP Sanjay Raut on Thursday criticised the Tamil Nadu Governor’s decision not to invite TVK chief Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam leader Vijay to form the government, calling the move “extremely unconstitutional”.
Speaking to reporters in Nashik, Raut said the political situation in Tamil Nadu has become unusual after a fractured mandate, with no party crossing the majority mark in the 234-member Assembly.
According to him, TVK emerged as the single largest party with 108 seats, while the majority mark stands at 118 seats.
Raut argued that if supporting parties extend backing to TVK, the party could still form the government, and therefore the Governor should not block the process.
He also alleged that the Governor’s stand reflects political bias, stating that even after submitting a list of supporting MLAs, the Governor has not invited Vijay to take oath as Chief Minister.
“The Governor’s stand is extremely unconstitutional,” Raut said, adding that denying the single largest party a chance to form the government undermines democratic norms.
He further claimed that if Congress and other smaller parties support TVK, it could cross the majority threshold, but the Governor has still taken a “tough stand”.
The remarks come amid ongoing political uncertainty in Tamil Nadu following a hung Assembly verdict, with competing claims and alliance negotiations continuing behind the scenes.
