Russia backs India as Mediator in Middle East Iran-UAE Dialogue Push

Russia has suggested that India could play a key role in mediating ongoing tensions in the Middle East, including facilitating dialogue between Iran and the United States as well as Iran and the United Arab Emirates.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov made the remarks during his visit to New Delhi for a BRICS foreign ministers’ meeting, highlighting India’s diplomatic experience and growing global influence.
Lavrov said that India, as the current BRICS chair, could help bring key stakeholders together for dialogue aimed at long-term stability in the region. He added that New Delhi’s strategic position as a major energy consumer gives it a direct stake in ensuring peace and stability in West Asia.
He specifically suggested that India could facilitate conversations between Iran and the UAE to reduce tensions and prevent further escalation in the region.
The Russian minister also pointed to ongoing global geopolitical friction, alleging that some external powers were attempting to deepen hostility between Iran and Arab countries, while Russia was instead working to promote dialogue and de-escalation.
His remarks come at a time when regional tensions remain high, with instability in West Asia and concerns over energy security impacting global markets. The proposal also coincides with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the UAE, where energy cooperation and strategic ties are key focus areas.
India’s role as BRICS chair has further strengthened its position as a potential diplomatic bridge between conflicting regional powers, with Moscow suggesting that New Delhi could host or facilitate dialogue to prevent further escalation.
