Rs 7,000 crore Delhi–Gurgaon tunnel likely to get Cabinet nod to boost connectivity

The Union Cabinet is likely to approve a major infrastructure project worth around Rs 7,000 crore aimed at significantly improving connectivity between Delhi and Gurugram, according to official sources.
The proposed six-lane tunnel will connect South Delhi’s Nelson Mandela Marg with Shiv Murti near Mahipalpur, providing a signal-free underground corridor towards Gurugram. The project is expected to ease congestion on key arterial routes, including NH-48, Rao Tula Ram Marg, and surrounding airport-bound traffic corridors.
Officials said the tunnel is part of a broader plan to decongest the Delhi–NCR region by creating alternate high-speed routes and reducing pressure on existing surface roads. Once completed, it is expected to offer faster and smoother access between South Delhi and Gurgaon, including improved connectivity to Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport.
The project, which has been under planning and approval stages for some time, is now expected to move forward after Cabinet clearance. It will be executed by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and will include advanced safety systems such as ventilation, emergency exits, CCTV surveillance, and fire control mechanisms.
The initiative is part of a larger infrastructure push to modernise urban mobility in the National Capital Region and address long-standing traffic bottlenecks caused by rapid urban expansion.
