Rs 177 cr approved to fix monsoon waterlogging

The Delhi Government has approved major stormwater drainage remodelling projects worth over Rs 177 crore to strengthen the Capital’s drainage infrastructure and reduce waterlogging during the monsoon. The projects, sanctioned by the Public Works Department (PWD) under the New Master Drainage Plan, will cover several key areas in North and North-West Delhi.
According to officials, the works will focus on remodelling and upgrading existing stormwater drains using modern precast RCC technology. The projects are expected to improve drainage capacity, speed up construction, and minimise disruption to traffic during execution.
PWD Minister Parvesh Sahib Singh said the initiative aims to address long-standing drainage issues faced by residents in many parts of the city. “For years, people in several localities have faced serious waterlogging during heavy rains. These projects are part of a long-term plan to modernise Delhi’s storm water drainage system and ensure smooth flow of rainwater,” the minister said.
He added that the focus is not only on building new infrastructure but also on strengthening existing systems that have become inadequate due to rapid urban expansion. “By using precast RCC drains, we will improve durability and increase water carrying capacity. This will also allow faster construction and better-quality control,” Singh said.
The projects include the remodelling of drains along several important corridors. A Rs 46.45 crore project will cover the stretch from Camp Chowk to Azadpur H-Point on Mall Road, one of the key drainage corridors in the area. Another major project worth Rs 24.50 crore will upgrade the storm water drainage system along Sultanpuri Nangloi Road, from the railway station to the bus terminal via Jalebi Chowk. The works aim to improve drainage in areas that frequently experience flooding during heavy rains.
The department has also approved a Rs 22.66 crore project to remodel drains on both sides of the road from Jain Nagar to Rohini Sector-22 Red Light. In addition, Rs 19.59 crore has been sanctioned for stormwater drain remodelling on Maharaja Aggarsen Marg. Other projects include a Rs 17.88 crore drain upgrade from Avantika Red Light to Vishram Chowk on Chhoturam Marg and a Rs 13.72 crore project along Police Station Road in Sultanpuri, connecting the bus terminal to the flood control drain.
The works will be executed in phases and monitored closely to ensure quality and timely completion. Once completed, the upgraded drainage network is expected to reduce flooding risks and provide long-term relief to residents who regularly face waterlogging during the monsoon season.
The Government has also cleared a Rs 12.33 crore project on Gyan Shakti Mandir Marg to remodel stormwater drains using precast RCC structures.
Further improvements are planned along Sultanpuri Main Road and Jagdamba Road, where a Rs 10.03 crore project will upgrade drains between the flood control drain and Jalebi Chowk. Another Rs 10.29 crore project will strengthen the drainage system across multiple roads in Rohini Sectors 16 and 17, including stretches from B-1, B-3, and A-2 to E-3 and B-1 to A-8.
PWD officials said the projects aim to replace ageing and inadequate drains with scientifically designed infrastructure capable of handling higher volumes of rainwater. This is expected to significantly improve stormwater flow in densely populated areas.
Officials said the projects form part of the Government’s broader effort to modernise civic infrastructure and make Delhi’s urban systems more resilient to heavy rainfall and climate-related challenges.
