Railways aproves ₹993 crore Arakkonam–Chengalpattu Doubling Project

In a major boost to Chennai’s suburban rail network, Indian Railways has approved the Arakkonam–Chengalpattu doubling project at an estimated cost of ₹993 crore.
The 68-km project, under Southern Railway, aims to enhance capacity on one of the busiest sections of the Chennai suburban rail system. Officials said the route is a crucial part of the Chennai circular rail network connecting Chennai Beach, Tambaram, Chengalpattu, and Arakkonam.
According to the Ministry of Railways, the doubling of the line will significantly reduce congestion, improve train punctuality, and allow for increased frequency of suburban services. The corridor is currently operating at near full capacity, with traffic expected to rise further in the coming years.
Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said the project will improve operational efficiency and strengthen both passenger and freight movement across the region. It will also benefit the transport of key commodities such as cement, automobiles, food grains, and steel.
The route passes through several major industrial and economic hubs including Sriperumbudur, Oragadam, Mahindra World City, and Irungattukottai, making it important for both industry and commuters.
Officials added that the project will also support upcoming infrastructure developments in the region, including the proposed Parandur airport near Kancheepuram, further increasing its strategic importance.
The Arakkonam–Chengalpattu doubling project is expected to modernise rail infrastructure, improve connectivity, and support long-term regional growth in Tamil Nadu.
