Senior Punjab Government officials, including the Additional Chief Secretary (Home), the Director General of Police and the Police Commissioner of Jalandhar, appeared before the Committee of Privileges of the Delhi Legislative Assembly on Friday.
The officials appeared before the committee in the context of the issue related to an incident concerning alleged sacrilege that took place on the floor of the House on January 6, 2026.
The meeting of the Privileges Committee was held at the Assembly premises. Additional Chief Secretary (Home), Punjab, Alok Shekhar, DGP Punjab Gaurav Yadav and Jalandhar Police Commissioner Dhanpreet Kaur presented their submissions before the panel.
The committee is chaired by MLA Pradyumn Singh Rajput. Other members include Abhay Kumar Verma, Ajay Kumar Mahawar, Neeraj Basoya, Ram Singh Netaji, Ravi Kant, Satish Upadhyay, Surender Kumar and Surya Prakash Khatri.
Speaking on the development, Delhi Assembly Speaker Vijender Gupta said the committee is currently examining the issue and its report is awaited. He said it would be premature to indicate how long the process will take. “Once the committee finalises its report, it will be tabled before the House. The House will deliberate on the recommendations, and the final decision will thereafter be taken by the Chair,” Gupta said.
Referring to the background of the matter, the Speaker said the incident is unfortunate and said the entire process to address the matter is underway as per the rules. Gupta stressed that there can be no compromise with the privileges of the House, its officials and its members. He said the dignity of the Assembly must be upheld at all times, as it reflects the democratic and constitutional framework of the country.
He explained that legislative privilege ensures that members are able to participate in discussions freely and without external pressure. “Every member of the House has certain privileges. Any interference, tampering or violation of these privileges will be met with zero tolerance,” he said.
The speaker also assured that all proceedings in the matter will be conducted strictly in accordance with established rules and procedures. He said the process will remain time-bound, orderly and transparent.
Gupta added that any action taken by the Assembly would be guided by principles of justice and fairness. “The objective is to ensure that the outcome commands respect and appreciation for its impartiality and integrity,” he said.
