Project Sangam shows visible impact on Delhi taffic issues

Delhi Traffic Police’s multi-agency initiative “Project Sangam” has started showing visible results across several parts of the Capital, with authorities carrying out coordinated action against illegal parking, traffic bottlenecks, wrong-side driving and road safety violations.
The project, launched as a collaborative and citizen-focused exercise, has brought together traffic police, civic agencies, Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs), market bodies and Government departments to improve traffic flow and road safety in different zones of Delhi.
According to Delhi Traffic Police, enforcement drives under the project have led to action against illegal parking, encroachments and unsafe road practices in major congestion-prone areas. In East Delhi, special enforcement drives were conducted on Vikas Marg to tackle illegal parking and wrong-side movement of e-rickshaws. Traffic Police also sent proposals to the Public Works Department for construction of service roads near Jhilmil Industrial Area to prevent vehicles from entering roads from the wrong direction.
In West Delhi, regular challans were issued against cranes parked improperly near Hari Kunj. Authorities also directed agencies to reposition a Safe City Project camera box near Metal Forging after it obstructed visibility of traffic signals.
Traffic Police said focused action was also taken in North Delhi. Motorcycle patrols were intensified and no-parking signboards were installed on Maharaja Agrasen Marg in Pitampura. Encroachment removal drives were also carried out near KP Block Market to ease traffic congestion and improve pedestrian movement.
In South and Central Delhi, authorities proposed installation of boom barriers and speed breakers in Kailash Hills to improve traffic regulation and road safety. Multiple agencies are also coordinating to address parking management and pedestrian safety near Sunder Nursery and Nizamuddin areas, officials said.
Delhi Traffic Police stated that the project is based on cooperation between enforcement agencies and local residents rather than only punitive measures.
Officials said the initiative aims to solve long-pending traffic problems through continuous monitoring and direct public participation.
As part of the campaign, several meetings have been held with RWAs and market welfare associations across Delhi to identify local traffic issues and find practical solutions. The first major multi-agency meeting under the initiative was convened by the Deputy Commissioner of Police of Northern Range in Rohini on April 8. Similar meetings later took place in Daryaganj, Rajouri Garden, Ashok Vihar and East Delhi localities.
On April 11, the Eastern Range held a joint meeting at Oswald Bhawan with representatives from 15 RWAs and 17 market welfare associations. Following the meeting, enforcement drives were launched against illegal parking and wrong-side driving by e-rickshaws on Vikas Marg. A separate meeting held in Daryaganj on April 30 focused on problems related to double parking and vertical parking. Authorities subsequently began towing vehicles parked improperly in the area.
On May 1, officials met representatives of the Marble Market in Rajouri Garden and intensified enforcement against obstructive parking during weekends. Traffic Police said awareness generation has been a major part of Project Sangam. Between April 10 and April 28, road safety programmes were organised in schools, including GBSSS Samalkha, Carmel Convent School and Kerala School, covering nearly 1,400 students.
Overall, more than 28 school awareness drives involving over 6,630 students have been conducted under the project so far. In addition, 14 street plays and awareness campaigns at traffic signals were organised to educate commuters about traffic discipline and safe driving practices. Officials said over 30 meetings with RWAs and market associations have also been held across the city to improve coordination between residents and enforcement agencies.
