Police bust fake luxury brands racket

The Delhi Police Crime Branch has busted a large counterfeit branded garments racket operating from a luxury hotel in Vasant Kunj and seized fake clothing, watches, handbags and footwear worth lakhs that were being sold to customers as genuine premium products during a discount exhibition.
Police arrested one man from the spot and said the operation was part of an organised network that staged temporary sales in reputed hotels to pass off duplicate branded goods as original merchandise.
Deputy Commissioner of Police Pankaj Kumar of the Crime Branch said the racket was cheating consumers on a large scale by creating a professional retail setup and offering heavy discounts on what were projected as authentic branded items.
He said the operation also caused financial losses to the original companies and the government. The raid was carried out on May 3 by Western Range I of the Crime Branch at the ballroom of Hotel The Grand in Vasant Kunj after a complaint from representatives of Brand Protectors India Pvt Ltd. The complainants informed police that a suspicious exhibition sale was offering clothing and accessories under the names of several well-known international and national brands.
A police team entered the venue and found a full-fledged temporary showroom functioning under the banner of a discount sale.
