Police arrest proclaimed offender in Ghaziabad

A man who was declared a proclaimed offender earlier this month for repeatedly attacking his wife with a knife, holding her responsible for the deaths of their two newborn children, was arrested by the Delhi Police’s Crime Branch in Ghaziabad on Saturday. He was traced to a hideout while allegedly plotting another assault on her.
The accused, Sajid Ali, a resident of Bindapur, had been on the run since 2025 to avoid arrest. He was declared a proclaimed offender in an attempt-to-murder case registered at the Dabri police station in 2021. He was also wanted in a separate case involving grievous hurt and had been evading trial in another criminal case.
A senior police officer described the pattern behind Sajid’s attacks on his wife. “Sajid had allegedly attacked his wife multiple times with the intention of killing her. Investigators described him as a maniac and a jilted husband, citing his alleged obsessive hostility towards his wife, whom he blamed for the deaths of their two children shortly after birth,” the officer said.
Police said Sajid married in 2015. The couple lost two children, both of whom died shortly after birth. According to police, these losses deeply affected Sajid, and he gradually developed resentment toward his wife, holding her responsible for the deaths. He subsequently became addicted to drugs and alcohol and began frequently demanding money from her to sustain his addiction.
In 2021, Sajid allegedly attacked his wife with a knife on three separate occasions, which led to his arrest in the attempted murder case. He was released from jail in November 2024. Within months, in 2025, he allegedly attacked her again and then went into hiding to evade arrest.
A team from the Crime Branch worked to track him down and traced his location to the Ikram Nagar area in Ghaziabad. Acting on this information, the team laid a trap near Labour Chowk on Saturday. Sajid was spotted arriving to meet an associate. When he noticed the police team, he attempted to flee but was apprehended after a brief chase.
At the time of his arrest, Sajid had already been declared a proclaimed offender by a local court in the 2021 attempt-to-murder case, and non-bailable warrants had been issued against him in another case as well.
