PM Modi pushes ‘Make in India’ drive to reduce import dependence

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has directed key government ministries to identify products that India can manufacture locally instead of relying heavily on imports. The move aims to strengthen domestic industries, protect supply chains, and reduce the country's exposure to global economic disruptions caused by geopolitical tensions.
According to officials, the Commerce Ministry is preparing a list of more than 100 products that could see increased domestic production. These include electronics, chemicals, medicines, fertilizers, semiconductors, automobiles, and machinery. The government is also considering financial incentives and subsidies to encourage local manufacturing.
The initiative comes as India faces challenges from global conflicts, rising import costs, and supply chain uncertainties. Recent disruptions have highlighted the country's dependence on imported raw materials and components, particularly from China. To address these risks, the Centre is focusing on expanding manufacturing capacity and promoting self-reliance under its broader economic strategy.
The government believes that strengthening domestic production will improve economic resilience, create jobs, reduce import bills, and help India better withstand future global shocks while supporting long-term industrial growth.
