Tribal clashes rock Manipur
Clashes between members of two tribal communities at the Senapati-Kangpokpi border in Manipur on Tuesday prompted authorities to impose prohibitory orders. The violence erupted when security forces attempted to clear a roadblock set up by Naga volunteers enforcing a three-day shutdown called by the United Naga Council (UNC). The shutdown was organised to protest the April 18 killing of two individuals in the Ukhrul district. Tensions escalated after Kuki villagers from Changoubung joined the confrontation, leading to stone-pelting. During the unrest, a few rounds were fired, though officials said it remains unclear who opened fire. Following the clash, restrictions were imposed in the Kangpokpi sub-division under Section 163(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, barring residents from stepping out after 6 pm until further notice.
Govt proposes stricter AI labels
The Union Government has proposed stricter disclosure norms for AI-generated content, mandating continuous and clearly visible labels throughout the entire duration of visual displays, replacing the earlier requirement of “prominent visibility.” The Ministry of Electronics and IT (MeitY) introduced the change as part of draft amendments to the IT Rules and extended the deadline for stakeholder feedback to May 7 from April 29. The ministry said the revisions aim to ensure clearer identification of synthetically generated information amid concerns over the misuse of artificial intelligence. The proposal comes alongside broader changes, including bringing independent news creators and influencers posting “news and current affairs” under a regulatory framework similar to registered publishers. It also suggests mandatory compliance by intermediaries.
The government said the amendments are open for consultation and feedback will remain confidential to encourage candid responses. However, digital rights group Internet Freedom Foundation criticised the move, warning of “consultation fatigue” and calling the approach ad hoc. It also flagged concerns over extending the labelling requirement to all users and tools, not just news platforms. The changes build on earlier rules requiring quick takedown of unlawful content and labelling of AI-generated material, as authorities seek tighter oversight of online platforms.
