Over 5.3 lakh women use Pink Saheli Card for free bus travel

More than 5.3 lakh women in Delhi are now using the government's Pink Saheli Smart Card, marking a major shift towards digital and accessible public transport for women, officials said on Tuesday. The scheme, introduced by the Delhi government, allows free bus travel and supports seamless movement through a tap-based system.
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said the growing number of users reflects rising trust in public transport and greater participation of women in daily commuting. She described the card as more than a travel facility, calling it a tool for empowerment and inclusion. “Our aim is to make public transport safe, simple and accessible for every woman. This card gives them a smooth and dignified travel experience,” she said.
The Pink Saheli Smart Card works on the National Common Mobility Card platform. It allows users to tap on electronic ticketing machines in buses instead of using paper tickets. This has simplified boarding and reduced waiting time.
The scheme is open to all women and transgender residents of Delhi aged five years and above. While bus travel is free, the same card can also be used for paid travel on the Metro and other transport systems, making it a single solution for multiple modes of travel.
Officials said all issued cards are currently active, indicating regular usage. The digital system also allows users to recharge the card online and track their travel records.
