Over 300 Cow Carcasses Found At Jaisalmer Dumping Site, Probe Ordered

Over 300 cow carcasses were discovered at a municipal garbage dumping site located around 7 km from the Jaisalmer district headquarters in Rajasthan, triggering shock and prompting an official probe into the incident.
According to officials, the carcasses were found scattered at the municipal dumping yard, leading to strong public outrage after visuals from the site began circulating on social media. The incident has raised questions over the handling of dead animal disposal in the region and alleged negligence by the authorised contractor responsible for the process.
Local authorities said the situation reflects serious lapses in waste and carcass management systems, particularly regarding designated disposal protocols. The municipal administration has initiated steps to identify responsibility and ensure compliance with proper environmental and sanitation norms.
Following the discovery, the district administration ordered a factual inquiry into the matter. The Municipal Council has also issued a notice to the contractor concerned, seeking an explanation for the violation of disposal guidelines and warning of strict action if lapses are confirmed.
Officials further said corrective measures, including removal and proper disposal of the carcasses, have been initiated at the site. The probe will also examine whether designated disposal pits and handling procedures were followed as mandated under municipal contracts.
The incident has reignited concerns over stray cattle management and the effectiveness of carcass disposal infrastructure in several urban and semi-urban regions of Rajasthan, where similar lapses have been reported in the past.
Authorities are expected to submit a detailed report after investigation, which may lead to penalties, contract review, or further administrative action depending on findings.
