Nora Fatehi apologises before NCW over ‘Sarke Chunar’ controversy

Actor Nora Fatehi appeared before the National Commission for Women on Thursday in connection with the controversy surrounding the song Sarke Chunar Teri Sarke from the Kannada film KD The Devil.
The Hindi version of the song, featuring Fatehi and actor Sanjay Dutt, had sparked criticism after its release on YouTube in March over allegedly sexually explicit lyrics. Following public backlash, the makers removed the Hindi version from the platform, although the track continued circulating online.
Speaking to reporters after appearing before the Commission, Fatehi said there was no intention to offend anyone and acknowledged the responsibility that comes with being an artist.
“There was no intention to offend anybody, but of course, I have to be responsible as an artist,” she said.
The actor also announced that she would sponsor the education of orphan girls as part of a social initiative following the controversy.
The NCW had earlier taken suo motu cognisance of media reports related to the song and issued summons to Fatehi, Dutt, lyricist Raqueeb Alam, producer Venkat K Narayana and director Kiran Kumar. The Commission stated that the dance number appeared “sexually suggestive and objectionable” and could violate provisions under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, the IT Act and the POCSO Act.
Fatehi had earlier clarified that she had performed only for the original Kannada version of the song and had not approved the Hindi lyrics used in the controversial release.
Earlier, Dutt had also appeared before the Commission and issued an apology over the matter. He additionally committed to supporting the education of 50 tribal girls as part of corrective measures.
Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw had earlier informed Parliament that the controversial song had been banned following the complaints and backlash.
